Most flights to the country depart from Russia and Turkey, Georgia’s largest neighbors. However, you may have other options departing from Armenia, Azerbaijan, among others.

Georgia is a very small country, but its natural landscapes are very varied and an invitation to photography – forget about the selfie thing! To the north is the Caucasus mountain range, with high mountains covered in snow almost year-round. Villages like Mestia and Kazbegi are a good base from which to explore this part of the country. Kutaisi, the second largest city in Georgia, is surrounded by valleys, natural parks and canyons where you can also practice rafting.

There is also the Borjomi water circuit and the Black Sea beaches, with Batumi and Poti being the most famous. Do you want to take really beautiful pictures? Go in autumn, when the color of the foliage goes from yellow to orange.

While Georgia is a backpacker magnet, the country also offers great options for those looking for sophistication and comfort. And a large part of the good value for money is due to the fact that Georgia be a cheap destination. But since July 2015, the country has become even cheaper, as the local currency, the lari (GEL) has depreciated by more than 30%. If you really want to save a lot, you can have lunch for 7GEL (about 3USD, €2.80).

Food

Georgians are also very proud of their cuisine. And it’s no wonder! Georgian cuisine is very varied, based on its rural roots and austere history. The most famous dishes are the ratchapuri, a pizza-like dough filled with cheese and which comes in several versions. Another very popular and excellent dish is the rincáli, which are dough bags filled with ground beef, cheese, potatoes or mushrooms, similar to dumplings.

The Wine

Many researchers support the theory that wine has been produced in what is now Georgia for over seven thousand years. This makes Georgia the oldest wine producer in history. In addition, more than half of the world’s grape varieties come from here. Add to that the fact that many wineries and monasteries produce wine by hand, in clay vats.

Culture

Throughout its history, Georgia has gone through several periods of foreign occupation. But it still managed to keep its culture largely intact. Historically, there was Russian influence (despite some resistance). There was also Persian influence, mainly in architecture and painting.

Contemporary and ecclesiastical art also have their place here. You will find several works of sacred painting in homes and especially in the many monasteries and churches in the country. Being a religious people, it is normal to find churches scattered everywhere, the vast majority following a common architectural style, which distinguishes Georgian temples from Russian and Catholic ones.

Therefore, Georgia offers many attractions in the Caucasus region and is a destination that you must know before you die!
