The pandemic caused by the new coronavirus has promoted structural changes around the world and in different sectors of society. One of the hardest hit areas has been tourism — some countries more than others. In 2020, during the height of the pandemic, about half of the world’s population was in quarantine. That is, there was a restriction on the movement of people, in order to inhibit the circulation of the new coronavirus. With this restriction, several businesses were affected, including basic services. Others were fully affected, such as tourism.

Among the countries that have been greatly affected by the coronavirus crisis in relation to their tourism, Turkey is one of them.

This country has a natural vocation for tourism. And this inclination is due to numerous factors, linked to the history, culture and geography of the country. After all, Turkey is located in what was the heart of the Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman Empire).

Contrary to popular belief, Istanbul is not the capital of Turkey — this is Ankara. However, despite not being the political capital, Istanbul is the cultural and economic capital of the country, in addition to being the largest city. The city is located above the ancient city of Constantinople “The Second Rome”, capital of the Eastern Roman Empire until 1453.

Since it was founded with the role of establishing Rome’s influence in the East, the city has been one of the most important in the world. Due to its strategic location, it has been an important trading post since ancient times. So, as it is the gateway for trade routes between east and west, in addition to connecting the Mediterranean to the Black Sea through the Bosphorus Strait.

It is also a very cosmopolitan city with several commercial attractions throughout the city.

Among the main attractions, we could not highlight the visit to the Blue Mosque, the only mosque in Istanbul to have six minarets. It is a temple of great magnitude, symbol of the autonomy of the Ottoman religion and political power.

Another important attraction is the Hagia Sofia, built by the Byzantines over 1400 years ago. It was once an Orthodox Christian temple and a mosque. Currently, it is a museum where it is possible to observe and study this contact between different cultures.

Visits to both monuments have similar rules. Both are now open to visitors.

Cappadocia is a region in the interior of Turkey, situated in a mountainous region of the country. In addition, and full of small villages and different tourist attractions.

The main tourist attraction of the region are the natural beauties, built with the action of time. In addition thanks to the volcanic origin of the region. The union of the volcanic origin and the erosion of time allowed particular formations, such as caves.
